At A Village Learning Center, we’re always on the lookout for innovative and budget-friendly ways to make learning not only vibrant, but accessible to all. Today we’re sharing a creative tip that we use to help with number recognition, number words, and counting

The Setup
Head over to your nearest home improvement store and grab some paint sample cards. Ours have three distinct sections. In the top section, you’ll find a number boldly displayed—let’s say, the number ‘2.’ Moving down, the second section introduces the written form of the number, such as ‘two.’ Finally, the third section showcases a visual representation of the number through, in this case, two dots.
Why Paint Sample Cards?
- Engaging Number Recognition: The clear and visually appealing layout of paint sample cards naturally draws children’s attention to the featured number.
- Number Words Exploration: By incorporating the written form of the number, we seamlessly introduce early literacy skills, connecting numbers with their verbal representation.
- Hands-On Subitizing: The inclusion of a visual element, like dots representing the quantity, encourages subitizing—an essential skill for rapidly recognizing and understanding quantities.
Making Learning Affordably Fun
We believe that learning opportunities should be accessible to everyone, and that’s why we adore this activity. It’s an inexpensive yet effective way to transform a trip to the home improvement store into an educational adventure. Not only does it make numbers come to life, but it also adds a splash of color to the learning process.
