Starting preschool is a big milestone for both children and parents. To help your family feel prepared, here are eight playful tips inspired by UNICEF’s guidance.
- Visit together. If possible, take your child to explore their new school and playground before the first day. Familiar surroundings reduce anxiety.
- Make new friends. Arrange a playdate with another child from the class so your child has a familiar face on day one.
- Play school at home. Use pretend play to act out routines like story time, singing and nap time. Let your child take turns being the teacher.
- Practice getting‑ready skills. Turn buttoning a coat, zipping a backpack or putting on shoes into a fun game.
- Share your experiences. Tell stories about your own first day of school or show old photos. Hearing that you were nervous too can be reassuring.
- Establish a routine. Start the preschool bedtime and wake‑up schedule a few weeks early. Pick out clothes and pack a backpack the night before to reduce morning stress.
- Listen to your child. Ask how they feel about starting school and reassure them that mixed emotions are normal.
- Plan the goodbye. Keep farewells quick and positive; develop a special handshake or song to make parting easier.
